In Mississippi, a 1908 law made it illegal for factories to hire young children under age 12 to work in factories, and established a 10-hour workday, and a 58-hour work week. The law was ignored by the owners of the seafood canneries, as well as the immigrant families needing the work.
In 1939, Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act, and today, all the states and federal government have laws regulating child labor.
